* NEWTON JOKE
    The following is from Bob Torres (rxt109@psu.edu) the NewtNews
mailing list guy. He found it in Wired 2.12 (yes, the magazine that
tried to copyright @). He also thinks it's funny. You have my
permission to flame Bob if you don't think it's funny.
    Q: How many Newton users does it take to change a light bulb?
    A: Foux! there to eat lemons, axe gravy soup.

* MP120 IS IN THE STORES!
    Thomas Diessel (diessel@informatik.unibw-muenchen.de) reports
that as of Saturday, November 12, 1994 you could buy a MP120 for
1299 DM (about $800) at the Munich Karstadt (the largest department
store company in Germany). Thomas also says that there have been
other reports in the news reporting prices of about 1150 DM.

* ICS ANNOUNCES UPDATED NEWTINFO
    Tom Collins (ics@indirect.com) of Innovative Computer Solutions
reports that they have fixed a bug in the Intelligent Assistant
section of the report, and added two things. The first is a section
to estimate heap used by installed packages. The second allows
NewtonMail users to e-mail a copy of the report.
    NewtInfo is a system profiler for the Newton MessagePad. It can
display, print, fax or e-mail a detailed report of soups, packages,
memory usage, add-on prefs and formulas, power-off handlers, idlers,
find-enabled packages, and intelligent assistance packages. Users
can find out what's taking up so much space on their systems, what
some hot new program patches, or why software is suddenly running
slower. Developers can have customers use it when calling in with
technical support questions. Update fixes bug in Intelligent
Assistant info and adds some new features. Shareware, $15.

* SCREEN SCRATCH TIP
    MervinM (MervinM@eworld.com) reports that you can use - "a very
light coat of vegetable oil applied to your screen will cover/fill
scratches and pits. I touch the inside of the lid of an oil bottle
with the very tip of my little finger. Depending on your usage it
will last several days to a week. I recommend vegetable oil as it
should not harm the plastics. I am not so sure about mineral oil as
it may be a solvent or otherwise degrade the surface. I also find
the scribe slides better on the surface. PS - this does attract lint,
but a quick wipe clears it off. Happy smearing!"

* CLARIFICATION ON FREEWARE NEWTONSCRIPT COMPILER
    Mathew (faupel@trshp.trs.ntc.nokia.com) would like me to let you
all know that he is in the "very early days" of his project, and that
he has no delivery time table. Even though he would like to work on
this full time, he will not be able to. When he is a position to ask
for alpha and beta testers he will do so. He has though release a
technical report on the NewtonScript bytecode. It can be found in
the /submissions directory at newton.uiowa.edu. It is called
bytecode-d0.xxx where xxx is one of .ps.Z, .rtf or .txt.

* NEWTON WWW BROWSER TO GO BETA SOON
    James Staten (james_staten@macweek.ziff.com) reports that Stefan
Gessler's WWW client for the Newton is going beta soon and hopefully
it will be freely available like NCSA Mosaic.

* NEWTON FAQ NEEDS SOME HELP
    JC Bousson (JC@easynet.co.uk) the keeper of the Newton FAQ, which
is really called "Newton MPs Facts & FAQs," would like some help. He
requests three things:
    1) When you ask a question on comp.sys.newton.misc and think that
it should be covered by the FAQ , it would be nice if you could
e-mail me a summary of the answers (mentioning the names of the
contributors).
    2) I own an OMP100, not a MP110, so there are things I can't check.
Could someone help me with the list of software that can't cope with
the MP110 shorter screen (subject 9.10 of the FAQ is hopelessly
brief).
    3) Can anybody write me something about NewtonMail (what actually
works, what are the drawbacks, the cost, etc...)

* MAGIC CAP DISCUSSION LIST
    Peter DiCamillo (Peter_DiCamillo@brown.edu) reports that there is
a discussion list for General Magic's Magic Cap operating system.
This list is appropriate for discussing hints and tips, development
information, questions, and other Magic Cap-related information.
    This list is distributed by an automated Listserv program.
Listserv can handle most requests related to your subscription and
the list archives. To subscribe to the list, send mail to
(listserv@brownvm.brown.edu). Provide a subscribe command as the
first line of text:
     subscribe magiccap first-name last-name
with your name substituted as indicated. To post an article, mail
it to (magiccap@brownvm.brown.edu). To contact the human list
administrator, write to (magiccap-request@brownvm.brown.edu).

* NEW VERSION OF POCKETMONEY
    Hardy Macia (HardyMacia@eWorld.com) has released version of
PocketMoney 1.33. The new versions fixes a few bugs and adds some more
features. You can find the latest version in the /submissions
directory at newton.uiowa.edu.

* NEW WWW SITE FOR PEN COMPUTING
    John Jerney (jerney@netcom.com) the Editor of Pen-Based Computing
announces a new WWW site dedicated to Pen-Based Computing. The URL
is: (ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/jerney/www/pbc.html).

* NEW NEWTONSHOP IN VIENNA
    Hannes WOLF (TeddyTheBear@magnet.at) reports that he got an
invitation to the opening of the second NewtonSource (the first is in
NY, NY, USA). This one is in Vienna, Austria.
    The shop is suppose to be at: Saeulengasse 9, A-1090 Wien
Oesterreich, Vienna, Austria, Europe, Tel: (+43-1) 317 8724, Fax:
(+43-1) 317 8724/90, Internet: (SPW@magnet.at).

* NEWTON MEDICAL INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET
    Vernon Huang (vernon@halcyon.com) reports the Newton medical
software site is at: ftp.info.apple.com path:
/Apple.Support.Area/Newton.and.StarCore.Info/HealthCare. The Newton
Medical Listserver can be accessed by sending email to
(listproc@dsg.harvard.edu), leave the subject blank, the body of the
message should read: "subscribe newtmed <your name (not your email
address)>" And lastly the Newton Medical WWW Web page URL is at:
(http://med-amsa.bu.edu/newton.medical/newton.medical.html)

* GETTING BACK TO BASICS
    According to a recent survey by the U.S. Department of Education,
84 percent of America's teachers consider only one type of
information technology absolutely "essential": a photocopier with an
adequate paper supply. (Telecommunications Policy Review 11/6/94 p.1)

* MORE INTERNET FACTS
    At least 60 U.S. daily newspapers are now offering or soon will
offer electronic services. There are 1,047 servers named
www.<something>.com. There are an estimated 3,864,000 hosts on the
Internet. And there were 1,535 domains registered between September
15 and October 15, 1994. (The Internet Index 11/5/94)

* PAPER MAIL IS HERE TO STAY
    A Pitney-Bowes survey concludes e-mail and fax have a long way to
go before they push traditional mail out of business. Just 20% of
corporate mail will be sent electronically this year. Nine out of ten
companies say their mail rooms are as busy as ever, and nearly
one-third expect increases in traditional mail output over the next
year. (Toronto Financial Post 11/12/94 p.8)

* AUTHORITIES STILL INVESTIGATING SOFTWARE THEFT
    A surge of outside computers connecting to the National High
Magnetic Field Laboratory's public information computer was the first
sign something was amiss, with many of the suspect connections coming
from a computer in the Center for Educational Technology, two miles
away at Florida State University. "Hackers were using it so much it
wasn't responsive to legitimate users," says the director of the
magnet lab's computer center. The computers have now been cleaned of
pirated software and electronic burglary tools, but even as the
crackers were scurrying to cover their tracks, all related data was
copied onto a back-up tape and turned over to the Computer Emergency
Response Team for further investigation. "I think it's time to slap
these little buggers upside the head," says the CEO of DeScribe, one
of the companies whose software was posted. (Miami Herald 11/14/94
1A)

* POWER LUNCH ON THE NET
    In 1990, 93 companies listed with the Internet's central registry.
More than 20,000 companies are currently registered, and "the
Internet is becoming the `power lunch' of the digital dimension."
Most strongly represented are financial firms with publishers coming
in second. (Wall Street Journal 11/14/94 R14)

Edupage 11/17/94
----------------
* MOTOROLA CHOOSES WINDOWS NT
    Motorola has said it will ship its PowerPCs with Windows NT
installed, a boost for Microsoft at a time when IBM has delayed its
own PowerPC production. Motorola, IBM and Apple originally developed
the PowerPC with the intent to challenge both Microsoft's and Intel's
dominance in the operating system and microprocessor fields. (Wall
Street Journal 11/16/94 B8)

* PRICING PROPOSALS FOR THE INTERNET
    A University of Michigan researcher proposes letting Internet users
bid for priority status for their e-mail by attaching the highest
prices they are willing to pay for quick delivery. "Smart" network
switches would then monitor and adjust the price of admission based
on network congestion. Meanwhile, folks at the University of Texas at
Austin have proposed smart agents that would help users shop around
the net for the best deal on price and delivery time. (Scientific
American 11/94 p.102)

* IBM AND APPLE: TOUGH LOVE
    Although IBM and Apple have agreed to work together on ways to help
software developers write programs able to run on machines from both
companies, IBM says it does not want to develop a common operating
system with Apple. In addition, Big Blue sees little customer demand
for a Mac clone from IBM (unless IBM "added value" to the Mac
operating system by modifying it -- which is not an idea that Apple
finds very thrilling). (Wall Street Journal 11/16/94 B6)

* HAYES GOES INTO CHAPTER 11
    Although owner Dennis Hayes says "our assets exceed our
liabilities," cash flow problems at Hayes Microcomputer Products have
forced the modem manufacturing company to seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy
to protect its cash, buildings, equipment and other assets from
creditors. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution 11/17/94 F1)

* APPLE TOPS DATAQUEST'S THIRD-QUARTER U.S. SHIPMENT LIST
    SAN JOSE, Calif. - Nov. 14, 1994 - Dataquest announced today at a
COMDEX press conference its third-quarter U.S. PC shipment estimates.
Apple Computer, fueled by sales of its Power Macintosh line, shipped
the most PCs in what was the largest quarter ever for the U.S. PC
market. It's the first time this year that a PC maker other than
Compaq has topped Dataquest's U.S. quarterly shipment list. Although
relinquishing the lead for the quarter, Compaq has a clear lead on a

------------------------
* BUSINESSES
    There has been a change in the advertising policy of NewtNews that
will take place in the first issue in December 1994. If you are
interested in continuing to advertise in NewtNews please send me mail
and I will forward to you the necessary information. Thanks!

* BREAK-UP
    Yes, there are two parts to this NewtNews. Part 1 covers all
electronic information that I had piled up in several folders on my
Mac. Part 2 covers print media that was also piled up. This change
of structure should not happen all the time, but it is
organizationally helpful to me! My apologizes to anyone who finds
this difficult.

* REALLY SURPRISED
    There is little or no major PDA information coming out of Comdex
in the major print magazines. Maybe I have to wait until this weeks
magazines. If you were at COMDEX and saw cool PDA stuff please
forward it to me ASAP and I will get into the next NewtNews!

* NEWTNEWS FOCUS
    I got mail from some saying that NewtNews wasn't really totally
focused on the Newton since I have stories not just about the Newton
in NewtNews. I thought the best way to respond was to provide all
readers with my perspective. I put information in NewtNews that I am
personally interested in and what I think the typically Newton user
will find interesting. Some non-Newton themes include: Internet,
wireless communications, modems, Apple, Macintosh, PowerPC, computer
science tidbits, general industry news etc. ... I think NewtNews will
continue in this trend. If there is Newton news we will report it
but we will spice things up with other information. Your opinions are
always welcome!

Comments from the Editor
------------------------
* BUSINESSES
    There has been a change in the advertising policy of NewtNews that
will take place in the first issue in December 1994. If you are
interested in continuing to advertise in NewtNews please send me mail
and I will forward to you the necessary information. Thanks!

* BREAK-UP
    Yes, there are two parts to this NewtNews. Part 1 covers all
electronic information that I had piled up in several folders on my
Mac. Part 2 covers print media that was also piled up. This change
of structure should not happen all the time, but it is
organizationally helpful to me! My apologizes to anyone who finds
this difficult.

* REALLY SURPRISED
    There is little or no major PDA information coming out of Comdex
in the major print magazines. Maybe I have to wait until this weeks
magazines. If you were at COMDEX and saw cool PDA stuff please
forward it to me ASAP and I will get into the next NewtNews!

* NEWTNEWS FOCUS
    I got mail from some saying that NewtNews wasn't really totally
focused on the Newton since I have stories not just about the Newton
in NewtNews. I thought the best way to respond was to provide all
readers with my perspective. I put information in NewtNews that I am
personally interested in and what I think the typically Newton user
will find interesting. Some non-Newton themes include: Internet,
wireless communications, modems, Apple, Macintosh, PowerPC, computer
science tidbits, general industry news etc. ... I think NewtNews will
continue in this trend. If there is Newton news we will report it
but we will spice things up with other information. Your opinions are
always welcome!
